Day 1
Welcome to Tanzania!
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, your guide will warmly welcome you and escort you to your accommodation. At the hotel, you will be served a delicious meal to help you settle in.
Later, our experienced mountain coordinators and your guide will provide a comprehensive pre-trek briefing—an exciting opportunity to learn about the journey ahead and prepare for your expedition.
Day 2
After an early breakfast, you will depart from Moshi, driving approximately one hour to Marangu Gate. Here, you will complete registration formalities before commencing your trek through the lush rainforest. The hike to Mandara Hut features a steady uphill trail, where you may encounter colobus monkeys and other wildlife. Upon arrival at Mandara Hut, you will enjoy a warm meal and have the option to take an acclimatization hike to Maundi Crater, which offers stunning panoramic views.
Day 3
After breakfast, you will continue your ascent through the rainforest, transitioning into the moorland zone. This six-hour trek provides breathtaking views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Upon arrival at Horombo Hut, you will settle in, enjoy a hearty meal, and receive a briefing from your guide about the next day’s trek.
Day 4
To assist with acclimatization, you will spend an extra day at Horombo Hut. You may choose to rest at camp or join an acclimatization hike to Zebra Rocks, a geological formation at 3,980 meters above sea level. This hike aids your body in adjusting to higher altitudes and reduces the risk of altitude sickness.
After the hike, you will return to the hut for a nourishing meal and a detailed briefing about the next day’s trek.
Day 5
Today’s trek crosses the stark and expansive saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The terrain is barren but offers dramatic views of the towering peaks. After approximately six hours of trekking, you will reach Kibo Hut, where you will have an early dinner and rest before your summit attempt. Your guide will provide a thorough briefing in preparation for the final ascent.
Day 6
Shortly before midnight, you will begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. The climb to Gilman’s Point (5,685 m) is the most strenuous section, taking 5–7 hours over loose scree. After reaching Gilman’s Point, you will proceed along the crater rim, passing Stella Point (5,756 m) before finally reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. If the weather is clear, you will witness a stunning sunrise. After celebrating at the summit, you will descend to Horombo Hut for a well-deserved rest.
Day 7
After breakfast, you will descend through the moorland and rainforest zones to Marangu Gate. Upon completion, you will receive your summit certificate.
A transfer will return you to your accommodation in Moshi, where you can enjoy a well-earned hot meal, shower, and comfortable bed.
If you wish to extend your adventure, our safari coordinator will be available to discuss further options.
Day 8

Tipping Guidelines for Your Climbing Crew (Full details below)
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is an unforgettable adventure that requires preparation. At Steven&Friends, we provide clear and practical information to help you choose between the Marangu Route (6 days) and the Lemosho Route (8 days). Our FAQs cover fitness requirements, tipping policies, route comparisons, visa details, and more.
To make it easy to navigate, we have organized the FAQs into General Kilimanjaro Trekking Information, followed by specific sections for Marangu and Lemosho routes.
How fit do I need to be?
While Kilimanjaro is often referred to as an “easily accessible” mountain, it should not be underestimated. No technical climbing skills are required, but general fitness is essential. The biggest challenge is the effects of high altitude, which can affect anyone regardless of fitness level, age, or gender.
To prepare:
What medical supplies and emergency support are available?
What vehicles are used for transport?
What luggage should I pack?
Where can I get a visa for Tanzania?
Should I give a tip?
Tipping is not a strict local custom in Tanzania, but it has become a standard in the tourism industry. Many guides and porters rely on tips as part of their income. We recommend following the tipping guidelines outlined in this document. Tips should reflect the quality of service, not just whether you reach the summit.
Which Kilimanjaro route should I choose?
How many days is the Marangu Route?
The Marangu Route is typically completed in 6 days, allowing for better acclimatization and increasing summit success rates.
How difficult is the Marangu Route?
The 6-day Marangu Route is considered moderately challenging, making it accessible for a variety of hikers. However, the summit day is the most demanding part of the climb, as it involves trekking through the high-altitude desert.
What is the success rate of the Marangu Route?
The Marangu 6-day itinerary has an 87% summit success rate. Success rates can vary by operator, but longer itineraries on other routes generally offer even higher success rates.
Why is Marangu called the “Coca-Cola Route”?
The Marangu Route is often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route” because it is perceived as the most accessible and touristy route. Unlike other routes where camping is required, Marangu offers hut accommodations with basic facilities. However, climbers should not underestimate the physical and altitude challenges of the trek.
What is the Marangu Route known for?
The Marangu Route is the oldest route on Kilimanjaro and the only one with hut accommodations instead of tents. It provides a more comfortable trekking experience, especially during the rainy season. Additionally, Marangu is famous for a historical event: Alexis Peltier once landed a plane near Kibo Hut on this route!
Which route is better: Marangu or Lemosho?
Both Marangu and Lemosho are chosen by thousands of climbers every year. Marangu’s hut accommodation may appeal to some, while Lemosho offers superior acclimatization, breathtaking landscapes, and a higher success rate, particularly for the 8-day variation.
One advantage of Marangu is the emergency access road to Horombo Hut (3,720m / 12,205ft), which facilitates quicker evacuation if needed. However, all Kilimanjaro camps have helicopter evacuation pads in case of emergencies.
