Kilimanjaro Trekking Guide

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is an unforgettable adventure that requires preparation. At Steven&Friends, we provide clear and practical information to help you choose between the Marangu Route (6 days) and the Lemosho Route (8 days). Our FAQs cover fitness requirements, tipping policies, route comparisons, visa details, and more.

To make it easy to navigate, we have organized the FAQs into General Kilimanjaro Trekking Information, followed by specific sections for Marangu and Lemosho routes.

How fit do I need to be?

While Kilimanjaro is often referred to as an “easily accessible” mountain, it should not be underestimated. No technical climbing skills are required, but general fitness is essential. The biggest challenge is the effects of high altitude, which can affect anyone regardless of fitness level, age, or gender.

To prepare:

  • Engage in aerobic exercise, hiking, and endurance training.
  • Strengthen your determination and mental resilience.
  • Familiarize yourself with altitude sickness symptoms and how to mitigate them.

What medical supplies and emergency support are available?

  • Bring personal medications and a first-aid kit.
  • Basic first-aid kits are provided on treks, but they do not include prescription drugs.
  • Medical supplies in Tanzania are limited, mainly available in Dar es Salaam.
  • Western doctors are available in case of emergencies.
  • Travel insurance is strongly recommended, including coverage for emergency evacuation.

What vehicles are used for transport?

  • Toyota Land Cruisers or Land Rovers are used for treks due to rough terrain.
  • Larger groups may use 4WD buses to stay together and minimize environmental impact.
  • Drivers are well-trained in tourism, safety, and environmental awareness.

What luggage should I pack?

  • Keep luggage to a minimum to ease the burden on porters.
  • Use soft, lockable, and waterproof bags as they may be placed on vehicle roofs.
  • Bring a separate smaller bag for items left at the hotel while trekking.
  • A small day pack is useful for carrying essentials while hiking.
  • On camping trips, all equipment is provided, except for a 4-season sleeping bag.
  • Domestic flights have a 15-20 kg luggage limit (including carry-on).
  • Keep essential items like medications in hand luggage as checked bags can be delayed.

Where can I get a visa for Tanzania?

  • Visitors to Tanzania must have a valid visa.
  • Tourist visas are required for most travelers.
  • Visa fees:
    • $100 for U.S. passport holders.
    • $75 for Canadians.
    • $50 for EU and most other nationalities.
  • You can obtain a visa before travel from a Tanzanian Embassy or on arrival at airports and land borders. However, we strongly recommend applying in advance.
  • You can apply and pay electronically via Tanzania’s official application form at www.immigration.go.tz.
  • Submit your application at least 4 weeks before departure to allow for processing time.

Should I give a tip?

Tipping is not a strict local custom in Tanzania, but it has become a standard in the tourism industry. Many guides and porters rely on tips as part of their income. We recommend following the tipping guidelines outlined in this document. Tips should reflect the quality of service, not just whether you reach the summit.

Which Kilimanjaro route should I choose?

  • Marangu Route (6 days) – Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” it is the most popular but has a lower success rate due to quick ascent.
  • Lemosho Route (8 days) – Excellent acclimatization and remote, making it ideal for first-time climbers.

How many miles is the Lemosho Route?

The 8-day Lemosho route itinerary spans approximately 70 km (43 miles). This places it among the moderate-length routes compared to other Kilimanjaro trekking options.

Where does the Lemosho Route start?

The 8-day variation of the Lemosho Route begins at Londorossi Gate (2,250 m / 7,381 ft). This route features a gradual ascent, which enhances acclimatization and increases the likelihood of reaching the summit. Climbers will experience lush rainforests, the scenic Shira Plateau, and the iconic Barranco Wall, making for a diverse and picturesque trek.

How difficult is the Lemosho Route compared to other routes?

The Lemosho Route is considered moderately challenging but is achievable for most hikers in decent shape. It is regarded as one of the best routes for beginners due to its gradual acclimatization profile and high success rate.

What is the success rate of the Lemosho Route?

The 8-day Lemosho Route has a high summit success rate of 90% or more, primarily because of its longer duration and steady altitude gain, allowing climbers to acclimatize effectively.

Why should I choose the Lemosho Route?

  • Best acclimatization profile among Kilimanjaro routes.
  • Breathtaking scenery and diverse landscapes throughout the trek.
  • Less crowded compared to Marangu and Machame routes, offering a more serene experience.
  • High summit success rate, making it an excellent choice for first-time climbers.

Who is the Lemosho Route best for?

  • Climbers looking for the highest success rate due to gradual acclimatization.
  • Those who prefer a scenic and less crowded experience.
  • Hikers who want a longer trek for better altitude adjustment.
  • Adventurers who wish to experience diverse terrains, from rainforests to alpine deserts.
